• Capoeira Retreat

    Flow, Rituals and Music

"...art, game, philosophy, fight, dance, tradition, music, theater, acrobatics,..." Capoeira is an interaction between members of a group exploring diverse flows of body conversation to exchange and play. Whether it takes the shape of a game, a dance or a combat, depends on the participants who, guided by music, will provoke, perform or play in the respect of the tradition of this 500-year old art. It is an experience, a way to work on one's challenges and a learning process that pervades daily life. Capoeira is a philosophy and a fight, a way to free oneself from social and body constraints. Join Samuka in this 2-day beginner retreat on Capoeira.

Participants will explore the different phases of a Capoeirista's journey: Game, Music and Rituals. The Game is the exchange between two Capoeirista players. It takes the shape of a fight hidden behind a dance which the practitioners theatrically expose or hide. The Music is the soul of Capoeira - every Capoeirista is a musician and learns the five instruments of Capoeira. The music sets the pace, accompanies and also guides the movement inside the circle. The Rituals are the basis of the interaction. Between sacredness and logic, they root the soul to the body.

Capoeira is one of the rare complete art forms. In advanced levels, the practitioner not only plays the game, the music and learns the culture, the philosophy and the tradition, but also learns handicraft by making the instruments and decorating them, creates new songs, learns how to share his knowledge with others & organizes events. Learning Capoeira is an unending process, but a complete one that satisfies all aspects of the Being.
